Capturing Everyday Magic: An Interview with Photographer Katie Amanda

Published on the Creative and Curious Club Blog at Leanne Foley Illustration

In this special episode of the Creative and Curious Club podcast, I sat down with talented UK photographer Katie Amanda for the show's first in-person interview. Over a cosy chat at my kitchen table, we explored how photography can help us see beauty in everyday life, stay creatively inspired, and connect more deeply with the people and places around us.

Katie is the creative force behind Katie Amanda Photography, a business built on storytelling, emotion, and finding joy in the simple things. Based in the UK, Katie’s thoughtful approach to photography blends documentary-style images with natural light, helping her clients capture candid, heartfelt moments that often go unnoticed.

How Photography Can Help Us Slow Down

We live in a fast-paced world, filled with endless to-do lists and digital noise. Katie shared how photography has the power to slow us down, encouraging us to pause, observe, and capture the small but meaningful moments in our day. Whether it's snapping a picture on a walk or documenting family life at home, photography becomes a mindful practice — a way of reflecting and reconnecting.

One thing Katie highlighted was that “the best camera is the one you have on you,” whether that’s a professional DSLR or simply your phone. It’s not about technical perfection. It’s about presence.

Storytelling Through the Lens

Katie’s photography journey started at age ten with a point-and-shoot camera gifted by her grandfather. What began as childhood curiosity evolved into a purposeful career centred around storytelling. She now specialises in headshots, brand photography, and weddings, often finding the greatest joy in one-to-one sessions where she can truly connect with her clients.

In our conversation, Katie explained that what draws her to a scene is often the light and colour. She’s particularly inspired by natural light streaming through windows or the contrast of light and shadow in everyday spaces. This intuitive approach fuels her creativity, even in familiar locations.

Finding Inspiration in the Everyday

When asked how she stays inspired creatively, Katie spoke about her love of variety. While some favourite spots like the Minster Ruins offer beautiful backdrops, she thrives on being creatively challenged with new locations and fresh perspectives.

Photography, for her, is also deeply personal. She shared how creating annual photo books for her family has become both a grounding and healing ritual. After the recent loss of her mother, those photo memories served as a reminder that even in difficult seasons, there are joyful moments worth holding on to.

Encouraging Creative Play

Katie encouraged anyone feeling creatively stuck to ignore the pressure to make everything perfect. Whether using a phone or a professional camera, her advice was to be playful, look for light, and focus on emotion and connection. Creativity doesn’t require elaborate setups, just a willingness to notice and enjoy the process.

As Katie beautifully put it, documenting everyday life isn’t just about photography. It’s about remembering. Whether it’s the candid chaos of family life or quiet coffee shop moments, these images hold our stories.
