Derwent Studio vs Caran d’Ache Neocolor: Which Art Set Should You Choose?
Ever stood in the art aisle or browsing online, wondering: “Which pencils are worth the investment?” I’ve been there.
In this post, I’m comparing two well-loved art supplies, the Derwent Studio 12 colouring pencil set and the Caran d’Ache Neocolor wax pastels (Neon 15 set), to help you decide which one might suit your creative style best.
I also filmed a full video review so you can see how both sets perform on paper. Watch the video on YouTube here.
Derwent Studio Colouring Pencils – A Closer Look
I picked up the Derwent Studio set because I wanted something precise for line work and fine details in my sketchbook. They have a harder lead than Derwent Coloursoft or Lightfast ranges, which makes them ideal for detailed illustrations, especially when working in small spaces or adding layers.
What I Liked:
Smooth application and easy to layer
Lovely for precision work and botanical-style sketches
British-made and widely available in the UK
What Could Be Better:
Colours aren't as bold or soft as other ranges
You’ll need to build up colour with layering for rich tones
That said, if you enjoy detailed, subtle work, especially for travel sketchbooks or journaling, they’re a great choice.
Caran d’Ache Neocolor Wax Pastels – The Neon Set
In contrast, the Caran d’Ache Neocolor pastels are bright, creamy, and bold. I chose the Neon 15 set to add some punchy colours to my mixed media pieces. They glide on like a crayon but blend beautifully, and can even be activated with water if you’re after more painterly effects.
What I Loved:
Incredibly vibrant and smooth
Ideal for quick mark-making and adding highlights
Can be used dry or wet (yes, even like watercolour!)
The Flip Side:
Not great for intricate detailing
Slightly more expensive than standard colouring sets
They’re perfect if you enjoy expressive, colourful artwork and want a playful, dynamic medium in your toolkit.
Side-by-Side: Which One is Better?
Honestly, it depends on your creative goals.
Choose Derwent Studio if you love structure, details, and layering soft colour.
Go for Neocolors if you’re drawn to bold expression, mixed media, or adding a bit of wow to your pages.
See Them in Action
I filmed a full side-by-side test with swatches, sketchbook examples, and my honest thoughts on each. You can watch the full video on my YouTube channel: Derwent vs Neocolor – Which Is Better?
Personal Verdict
For me, both serve a purpose. I find myself reaching for the Derwents when I’m working on more detailed pieces or quiet sketching moments at my kitchen table, while the Neocolors are my go-to for adding energy to my pages, especially when I’m working from my garden studio or on location around the Cotswolds.
